Rick Knea talks smart grid timing innovation at WSTS 2025
Session will explore how advanced sync technologies support energy resilience and efficiency
- Speakers: Rick Knea, business development manager at Oscilloquartz, Adtran
- Topics: Smart grid synchronization updates
- When: Wednesday, May 14, 10:45 a.m.
- Where: Workshop on Synchronization and Timing Systems, Savannah, Georgia, USA https://wsts.atis.org/
Accurate timing is the backbone of a resilient smart grid. From fault detection to efficient energy distribution, precise synchronization enables the seamless operation of next-generation grid technologies. However, many utility operators are overdependent on GNSS as a primary source of timing, potentially exposing them to jamming and spoofing events.
In this session, Rick Knea will detail how utility operators can create a resilient and assured timing network for distributed energy grids using cesium clocks and alternative low and medium-Earth orbit satellite constellations.
