Daniel Burch to tackle GNSS vulnerabilities in public safety networks at WSTS 2025

Session will discuss how outages like New York’s GPS disruption expose risks to emergency comms and how to fix them

  • Speakers: Daniel Burch, AVP of business development at Adtran, Oscilloquartz
  • Topics: Putting the SAFE back in public safety radio network synchronization
  • When: Tuesday, May 13, 9:15 a.m.
  • Where: Workshop on Synchronization and Timing Systems, Savannah, Georgia, USA https://wsts.atis.org/

Emergency radio systems in urban areas rely on GPS/GNSS for precise timing of simulcast transmissions. A recent outage in New York exposed how GPS jamming can cripple police, fire and ambulance communications, posing an urgent risk to public safety. These vulnerabilities demand immediate attention as spoofing threats continue to escalate.

In this session, Daniel Burch will examine public safety radio network design and share strategies to mitigate GPS disruptions. Drawing on the New York incident, he’ll explain how to strengthen timing and synchronization using ePRTC, TaaS and GPS alternatives as outlined in Executive Order 13905, to ensure emergency services remain resilient and responsive.
