“NGN READY”: Synchronization solutions for Next Generation Networks
More and more operators are gradually transforming their network platforms into so-called Next Generation Networks (NGN).
In NGNs the data of all services, be it real-time services (e.g. voice) or pure data services, are transported as IP packets over a packet switched network infrastructure. Despite the asynchronous nature of the switching or routing of packets, many network element types in NGNs require accurate and stable synchronization supply. Where SDH and SONET are used for transport, traditional synchronization technology is adequate. However, Ethernet technology is now gaining terrain especially in the access and metro domains.
In the future, many network elements in the access domain will be connected to the core network via Ethernet backhaul networks. Synchronization will have to be distributed to these network elements either with GPS receiver systems or with new synchronization techniques. Furthermore, many end systems in the NGN context require precise time-of-day. At Oscilloquartz we are prepared for these changes and we actively promote and develop new synchronization technologies.
Our newly developed synchronization products (SSUs, BITS clocks, GPS-receivers, etc.) are ready for the NGN future: either they already include NGN-specific functions such as the distribution of time-of-day, or they are designed in such a way, that future functions (e.g. packet based timing distribution) can be added on existing systems as additional hardware modules or by software upgrades.
Those Oscilloquartz products which are ready for NGN in that sense are designated in our product documents with the label “NGN READY”.
